{"id":36,"date":"2015-06-26T03:54:47","date_gmt":"2015-06-26T03:54:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.iam8up.com\/?p=36"},"modified":"2020-08-17T13:39:51","modified_gmt":"2020-08-17T13:39:51","slug":"migrating-a-linux-machine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iam8up.com\/?p=36","title":{"rendered":"Migrating a Linux machine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In my case I needed to move a machine from a headless box to an ESXi server. \u00a0The VMWare tool does not support software raid.<\/p>\n<p>I started by installing the OS on the new box with the same partition layout. \u00a0This takes care of all of the mbr and boot stuff. \u00a0The critical part, though, is \/ with the configuration, installed programs and any amount of data. \u00a0I used nc to do this and did it very painlessly.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>#server you&#8217;re sending files to<br \/>\nnc -l 1024 &gt; backup4.tgz<\/p>\n<p>#client you&#8217;re backing up<br \/>\ntar -cvpz &#8211;one-file-system \/ | nc neon.imaginenetworksllc.com 1024<\/p>\n<p>#boot the new box aka new client with a linux live cd and mount the partition<br \/>\nmkdir \/mnt\/sda3<br \/>\nmount \/dev\/sda3 \/mnt\/sda3<br \/>\nnc -l 1024 | tar -xvpzf &#8211; -C \/mnt\/sda3<\/p>\n<p>#on that backup server<br \/>\ncat backup4.tgz | nc NEW.BOX.COM 1024<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In my case I just installed the OS on the box so it had grub and the boot partition all done.
